Unlabeled Use of Commercial Product(s) or Product(s) for Investigational Use
Presentations will not include any discussion of the unlabeled use of a product or a product under investigational use with the exception of:
  • Sarah Bodach's discussion - A portion of cases ascertained as acutely infected were found via pooled HIV polymerase chain reaction (PCR) among individuals who tested HIV Ab-negative. This use of PCR has not been approved by the FDA; however, a validation study was first completed and submitted for approval. The protocol and study were approved by the New York State Department of Health Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Program (CLEP). Please refer to internet reference below for additional information.NGI: NY state approves use of NGI HIV RNA test in pooled plasma from clinical patients for diagnostic purposes [Internet] Albany, NY: New York State Department of Health; 2007 May 7. Available from: http://www.ngi.com/company/downloads/NY_Approval_for_HIV_clinical.pdf
  • Kevin Cranston's discussion on the use of antiretrovirals for post-exposure prophylaxis. This is currently in clinical trial (investigational use) and no labelling indication is being sought so, if proven effective in trials, will be an unlabelled use. This has been discussed with FDA and is not counter to their guidance.
  • Dr. Paula Frew's discussion on the study relating to a clinical trial of the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) investigational "UC-781" microbicide product originally developed by Biosyn and subsequently managed by Conrad. Participants in this acceptability study included trial participants and their partners who reported on experience with the investigational product. This study does not examine any safety endpoint outcomes from that clinical trial.
  • Jennifer Kates' discussion on the use of antiretrovirals for post-exposure prophylaxis. This is currently in clinical trial (investigational use) and no labelling indication is being sought so, if proven effective in trials, will be an unlabelled use. This has been discussed with FDA and is not counter to their guidance.
  • Dr. Dawn Smith's discussion on the use of antiretrovirals for post-exposure prophylaxis. This is currently in clinical trial (investigational use) and no labelling indication is being sought so, if proven effective in trials, will be an unlabelled use. This has been discussed with FDA and is not counter to their guidance.
  • Dr. Joanne Stekler's discussion which will likely include results of the study of different HIV antibody tests, antibody/antigen combination assays, and HIV NAAT, some of which are not currently licensed for use in the United States and some of which were used (e.g. retesting of frozen specimens) in a manner other than their FDA-approvals.
  • Dr. Lucia Torian's discussion on the use of antiretrovirals for post-exposure prophylaxis. This is currently in clinical trial (investigational use) and no labelling indication is being sought so, if proven effective in trials, will be an unlabelled use. This has been discussed with FDA and is not counter to their guidance.
